Solenoid Valve – Working process of solenoid valve

A solenoid valve is an electro-mechanical valve that can be used to control the flow of liquid or gas. The main components of the solenoid valves consist of a valve stem, valve disc, valve body, valve boot, valve seat, stop washer, centring washer, plunger, coil, and a cover nut. It is commonly used in hydraulics & pneumatics to shift two way and 3-way directional control valves and some pressure control valves. The basic function of the solenoid valve is to shut off, distribute, and release fluid.

Working process of the solenoid valves

The main functional components of solenoid valves are the coil, plunger, and sleeve assembly. When the orifice in the solenoid valve is open, then it allows the flow of fluid. However when it is closed, then it prevents the flow through the valve. To open the orifice of a solenoid valve plunger is used, which raises or lowers within the sleeve tube by energizing the coil. Once the solenoid coil is energized, the resultant magnetic field raises the plunger, enabling the flow. When the solenoid coil is energized in a normally open valve, the plunger seals off the orifice, which in turn prevents flow.

Application of Solenoid valves

  • Hydraulic action:- Solenoid valves are designed specifically for controlling hydraulic operations effectively.
  • Controlling air pressure:- Solenoid valves are used for mixing and distributing the air effectively and hence, effectively control the air pressure.
  • Treatment of water:- As it can purify the smallest particles and dust, they can be used effectively in the RO purifier as well.
  • Fuel supply: – A solenoid valve is used in fuel valves to control the oil in vehicles. Highly efficient solenoid valves are leak-proof and can control the flow of oil effectively.
  • Blood analysis instrument:- Solenoid valves are also used in blood analysis instruments. These instruments need to control the flow of the blood properly, and solenoid valves are designed specifically for this purpose.
  • Machines and plant engineering:- Solenoid valves are commonly employed in manufacturing companies or oil refineries. They are often used to control the temperature of heater or furnace, firing systems, etc.

Highly Durable and Reliable Solenoid Valves

Features of Solenoid valves

It consists of a movable armature made of an iron alloy and attached to the valve needle, all sealed into the valve body. The coil is wound around the valve housing that contains the armature. The solenoid valve can be activated by a thermostat as well. Sare used to control the temperature of a refrigerator or a room.

  • Full interchangeability of solenoid from AC to DC.
  • Valves with Zero leaks.

How does it work: Gate Valves

Gate valves are the most common valves found in the distribution system. Gate valves are mostly used for the on/ off control. Gate valves prevent the flow of the liquid in both directions. They are very easy to install and to maintain. Gate valves are cost-efficient and they are mostly used in petroleum industries because of their abilities to cut through liquids.

What is a Gate Valve?

A gate valve is a linear motion valve that is used to start or stop the flow of the fluid in piping. There is a gate or wedge type disk which moves perpendicular to the flow which directs the flow to stop or start. In any process plant, the gate valve has the most common use and are suitable for both above-ground and underground installations.

A gate valve is also known as a sluice valve. It is very easy to open it, one just have to lift the gate out of the path of the fluid. It does not require a wide surface; it fits in a very little space along the pipe axis. It requires a 360° surface contact between disk and seat to achieve proper sealing. A Gate valve is made up of certain parts that allow it to function properly. Valve’s body or shell is the most principle part of this particular valve which can connect the inlet and outlet pipes in a piping system.

What are the different applications of Gate Valves?

Mainly it is used for all kinds of applications and it is the best fit for all types of above ground and underground applications.

  • It is mostly used when the pressure loss is minimum and when the free bore loss is needed.
  • It can be used for numbers of fluids and it is suitable for potable water, wastewater and neutral liquids
  • The temperature is required between -20 and + 70-degree centigrade for which the velocity of the flow should be 5 m/s and up to 16 bar differential pressure.

What is the working principle of the Gate Valve?

There is a handle wheel on the top of the gate valve and when this wheel will be rotated in a clockwise direction, the steam and gate will move in the downward direction. It prevents the leakage of fluid through the valve.

When the wheel is rotated in the anti-clockwise direction, the valve will be opened and the steam and gate will move in the upward direction across the fluid. The gate valve can also be used in the semi-opened direction but the erosion of gate as fluid will strike and hence it is not recommended to open it partially.

Valve Design and Working Principle of Butterfly Valve

A butterfly valve is used to isolate or regulate the flow of a fluid. It can be used for a wide range of applications such as water supply, wastewater treatment, and fire protection, for chemical and fuel industries and many more.

Butterfly Valve Working Principle

It is based on the quick shut off principle. The disc of the valve is placed in the center of the pipe which allows a rod to go through it to an actuator, on the outer side of the valve. The disc remains parallel or perpendicular to the flow. A pressure drop is introduced by the disc upon the flow even when open.

It open or closed when the disc is rotated a quarter turn and hence it is also known as a quarter-turn valve. There is a metal disc on the rod and when the valve is closed it blocks the passageway by giving it a quarter turn. This metal disc is known as a butterfly. It is the most important component of the valve.

Butterfly valve classification

Butterfly valves are quick to open type valves used to stop, regulate and start the flow of the fluid. A gearbox type actuator is attached with large butterfly valves and a hand wheel is connected to the stem of the valve via a gearbox. The butterfly valve is classified into four types.

  • Centric Butterfly valves: Centric butterfly valves are also known as soft seated valves. They are used for low- pressure and non- critical applications in gate and ball valves. They are very cost-efficient and easy to install. Centric butterfly valves are also very lightweight.
  • Motorized butterfly valve: Motorized butterfly valves are used to control the media flowing through the pipelines of the system. By changing the position of a round disc within a pipeline, it starts operating. They are available in many different sizes and they can be fit into any type of specifications.
  • `Pre-insulated butterfly valves: Pre-insulated butterfly valves avoid the cost as well as manpower for insulating the valve after installation. They are made up of very fine quality materials. They are of very simple design and enhance durability. Pre-insulated valves have a long service life and they are crack resistance.
  • Wafer type butterfly valve: wafer type butterfly valve is very easy to install into the system but it does not work as an isolation valve. It is placed between pipe flanges and the flange bolts encircle the valve body.

Butterfly valves design

The butterfly valve comes into two designs, centric and eccentric. The only difference between these two designs is, in centric butterfly valve stem is placed in the center of the disc and disc is placed in the center of the bore. Whereas in eccentric butterfly valves, there can be more than one stem placed offset from the center.

Types of Valves in Gas and Oil Industry

In a piping system, valves play a very important role. They are the most essential components of the oil and gas industry and are used in various purposes. In upstream, midstream and downstream, valves are used for controlling the flow, protecting the equipment and refining of crude oil respectively. In this post, we shall discuss the types of valves used in the gas and oil industry.

Following are the most common types of valves used in the gas and oil industry:

  1. Control Valves:

As it is clear from the name that control valves are used to control the flow Based on the process conditions. A control valve is termed as a final control element in automatic control terminology. There are two main parts of control valve i.e. the sliding stem and the rotary action.

  2. Bellow Seal Valve:

Bellow seal valve is a kind of control valve which is used in balancing the pressure of the fluid. For pipelines of steam and flammable, explosive media, bellow seal valve is the perfect solution. By adopting the structure with bellows, it helps in avoiding the leakage of the valve stem. It is very secure and prevents the loss of fluids. It has a very long operating life with minimum operating cost. The structure of bellow seal valve is durable which helps in preventing leakage.

  3. Butterfly Valves:

Butterfly valve is used to stop, regulate and start the flow. It has a very vast use in oil and gas industry. It is a quarter- turn rotary motion valve which means that rotating the handle of the valve at 90° can completely close or start it.

  4. Cryogenic Valves:

Cryogenic valves are used in very cold applications. Most oil and gas industries use cryogenic temperature range starting at -238° F i.e. -150° . Cryogenic valve has a very keen ability to function in both low (-320° F) as well as high (750 psi) temperature.

  5. Gate Valves:

A gate valve is also known as sluice valve and it is mostly used for both above- ground and underground installation. It performs it operation doing a clockwise to close CTC or clockwise to open CTO rotating motion of the stem. Gate valves are also used when minimum pressure loss and a free bore is needed.

  6. Globe Valves:

Globe valves are used for regulating the flow in the pipeline and for throttling flow control. There is a flow direction arrow marked on the valve body and it must be installed according to it. Pressure classes of globe valve include 150 through 1500.

  7. Pressure Reducing Valves:

As the name tells, pressure reducing valves reduce the pressure of a fluid. It controls the downstream pressure or outlet of the fluid. It is an open, 2 ways valve which ensures the pressure of the fluid until the desired pressure is reached downstream.

These valves are used in many different appliances, systems, and common items inside the house, industries. Industrial valves are of various types such as Gate Valves, Globe Valves, Ball Valves, Butterfly Valves, Check Valves, Pressure Valves, and Diaphragm Valves, etc. SKG Pneumatics Inc, are leading suppliers of Industrial Valves and Equipment, based in Delhi. Applications of Valves in Water Industry

In industrial engineering, manufacturing and scientific communities, there is a vast use of valves. The main objective of the valve is to control the flow and pressure of water and to release air from the water system. Valves play a very ample role in the water industry.  Water valves are used in many parts of daily mechanical devices such as HVAC and water system in an office.

Most Common Valves Found in the Water Industry and their Characteristics

1. Gate Valves

Gate valves are the most common valves found in the distribution system. Gate valves are mostly used for the on/ off control. Gate valves prevent the flow of the liquid in both directions. They are very easy to install and to maintain. Gate valves are cost efficient and they are mostly used in petroleum industries because of their abilities to cut through liquids.

2. Butterfly valve

Butterfly valve also known as quarter turn valve because it provides 90-degree rotary motion for stoppage. They often came in large sizes but short in length and are of very light weight. They posses very low torque requirements.

3. Ball Valves

Ball valves are considered as ideal for pump check services. In ball valves a ball rotates between two circular seats which are made up of a kind of PTFE and co- polymer. They exist in a small size range between 1/2” to 12”. These valves are used in higher pressure applications. Ball valves can be operated with less torque than gate valves and has small dimension and are lighter in comparison of gate valves.

4. Plug Valves

Plug valves are used to control the flow by rotating the conically tapered plugs inside the valve body. They came in a very simple design with few parts and their maintenance and repair is very easy to do. They contain very low head cost and comes drip tight closing.

5. Regulating Valves

Regulating valves are designed to enable the direct control of flow rate and the considerable control of process quantities i.e. reduces the flow/ pressure. A high head loss can be tolerated by regulating valve and they came with multiple control scenarios. These valves are installed on trunk or industrial pipelines and it consists of a regulating unit which varies the flow cross-section.

6. Air/Vacuum Release Valves

As it is clear from the name that these types of valves releases air during the filling and testing of pipe and it also releases air that naturally accrues in pipes. During draining it allows air into the pipe and it also assures the pipeline carrying capacity.

Functions and Applications of Automatic Balancing Valve

Automatic balancing valves are used in heating and cooling systems where water flows through the system. Balancing valves are used to ensure the correct distribution of water flow within the system. Water flows from one system to another. When water is flowing in this way it is possible that the pressure is not consistent enough. This can lead to an inconsistent output. To control and regulate these valves are used.

Functions of balancing valves

When Check Valves & Non-return Valve are used in hydronic systems, it ensures a proper design flow within the system leading to a better working of the cooling system where it is being used. Apart from this the other functions of automatic valves are:

  • They work as pressure independent control valves and help to limit flow to achieve the desired rate of flow.
  • It is an automatic valve and does not require manual intervention. This makes it simpler to use and there is no dependence on external persons.
  • Ensures the best flow rate that can improve the efficient working of the system.
  • Valves help to eliminate vibration and noise from the system where they are used.
  • Automatic valves help to achieve better temperature control and cooling is more effective.
  • Since it is automatic in nature, there is no need for a person to be employed to physically operate the valves, thus it leads to savings in terms of labor and time – this translated to savings in money.
  • Easy addition of additional devices to the system without having an effect on balance.

Uses and applications of balancing valves

Automatic control valves have many uses and applications. It is commonly used in applications like:

  • It is used in HVAC (Heating Ventilation Air Cooling) systems used in large commercial and residential buildings to ensure temperature control.
  • It is used in chilled ceilings where a cooling effect has to be produced.
  • It can even be used in fan coil units.
  • It can be effectively used in any heating or cooling system where a balanced flow is needed.

Installation

Automatic balancing valves are very useful devices used in most cooling systems. When an organization wishes to buy and install these valves, they need to make sure they get it from one of the leading suppliers of Balancing valve. A well-known manufacturer and supplier would ensure quality in the valves. Durability and reliability are what one needs to look at while buying these valves.

Different Types of Check Valve and Its Applications

Check valves are designed to pass flow the fluid in one direction with minimal resistance and prevent reverse flow or damage to the passage. Check valves are the most important valves included in any system, whether household or industrial system. Different Check valve Types are designed for different applications.

How does Check valve work?

A check valve is constructed with a valve body, cover, and disc attached to a hinge and swings away from the valve seat to allow the flow of the fluid passing.

Types of Check Valves:

1. Swing Check Valve

The disc is unguided in a Swing Check Valve, when it moves to fully open position or to a fully closed position the fluid flows in a forward direction with minimal resistance. Many different discs and seat designs are made available by SKG Pneumatics to satisfy requirements of varying applications.

2. Ball Check Valves

Ball Check valves are constructed with a spherical ball inside the body which helps to control the flow of the fluid. The ball rotates freely when the fluid is passing by. This unique process makes it ideal for installing it for a viscous fluid.

3. Tilted Check Valves

A tilted check valve is designed with a disc which has a pivot point at the center of the disc. When the flow is streamed the disc open and when it turns to reverse the disc closes immediately. This Tilted Check valve is mostly used in agricultural areas.

4. Dual Disk Check Valve

A dual disk check valve is designed to control the flow of the fluid, the hinge is connected to a plate which rotates and the stream is controlled when the hinge is moved.

5. Silent Check Valve

This check valve availed by SKG Pneumatic are designed to eliminate water hammer and are recommended to use in multi-story buildings. It consists of a spring attached to the disc which slowly closes when the water flow decreases, eliminating the hammering.

6. Nozzle Check Valves

Nozzle check valves are designed to stream the flow of gas, fluid or slurry in low pressure. This check valve doesn’t allow reverse stream as it closes when low pressure is felt than actual.

SKG Pneumatics is the solution to your all piping system including also Industrial Valves. These are some non-return valve designed and supplied by SKG Pneumatics accompanied by Advance, Zoloto, NVR, etc to maintain the safety and better piping system.
