How does it work: Gate Valves

Gate valves are the most common valves found in the distribution system. Gate valves are mostly used for the on/ off control. Gate valves prevent the flow of the liquid in both directions. They are very easy to install and to maintain. Gate valves are cost-efficient and they are mostly used in petroleum industries because of their abilities to cut through liquids.

What is a Gate Valve?

A gate valve is a linear motion valve that is used to start or stop the flow of the fluid in piping. There is a gate or wedge type disk which moves perpendicular to the flow which directs the flow to stop or start. In any process plant, the gate valve has the most common use and are suitable for both above-ground and underground installations.

A gate valve is also known as a sluice valve. It is very easy to open it, one just have to lift the gate out of the path of the fluid. It does not require a wide surface; it fits in a very little space along the pipe axis. It requires a 360° surface contact between disk and seat to achieve proper sealing. A Gate valve is made up of certain parts that allow it to function properly. Valve’s body or shell is the most principle part of this particular valve which can connect the inlet and outlet pipes in a piping system.

What are the different applications of Gate Valves?

Mainly it is used for all kinds of applications and it is the best fit for all types of above ground and underground applications.

  • It is mostly used when the pressure loss is minimum and when the free bore loss is needed.
  • It can be used for numbers of fluids and it is suitable for potable water, wastewater and neutral liquids
  • The temperature is required between -20 and + 70-degree centigrade for which the velocity of the flow should be 5 m/s and up to 16 bar differential pressure.

What is the working principle of the Gate Valve?

There is a handle wheel on the top of the gate valve and when this wheel will be rotated in a clockwise direction, the steam and gate will move in the downward direction. It prevents the leakage of fluid through the valve.

When the wheel is rotated in the anti-clockwise direction, the valve will be opened and the steam and gate will move in the upward direction across the fluid. The gate valve can also be used in the semi-opened direction but the erosion of gate as fluid will strike and hence it is not recommended to open it partially.

Types of Valves in Gas and Oil Industry

In a piping system, valves play a very important role. They are the most essential components of the oil and gas industry and are used in various purposes. In upstream, midstream and downstream, valves are used for controlling the flow, protecting the equipment and refining of crude oil respectively. In this post, we shall discuss the types of valves used in the gas and oil industry.

Following are the most common types of valves used in the gas and oil industry:

  1. Control Valves:

As it is clear from the name that control valves are used to control the flow Based on the process conditions. A control valve is termed as a final control element in automatic control terminology. There are two main parts of control valve i.e. the sliding stem and the rotary action.

  2. Bellow Seal Valve:

Bellow seal valve is a kind of control valve which is used in balancing the pressure of the fluid. For pipelines of steam and flammable, explosive media, bellow seal valve is the perfect solution. By adopting the structure with bellows, it helps in avoiding the leakage of the valve stem. It is very secure and prevents the loss of fluids. It has a very long operating life with minimum operating cost. The structure of bellow seal valve is durable which helps in preventing leakage.

  3. Butterfly Valves:

Butterfly valve is used to stop, regulate and start the flow. It has a very vast use in oil and gas industry. It is a quarter- turn rotary motion valve which means that rotating the handle of the valve at 90° can completely close or start it.

  4. Cryogenic Valves:

Cryogenic valves are used in very cold applications. Most oil and gas industries use cryogenic temperature range starting at -238° F i.e. -150° . Cryogenic valve has a very keen ability to function in both low (-320° F) as well as high (750 psi) temperature.

  5. Gate Valves:

A gate valve is also known as sluice valve and it is mostly used for both above- ground and underground installation. It performs it operation doing a clockwise to close CTC or clockwise to open CTO rotating motion of the stem. Gate valves are also used when minimum pressure loss and a free bore is needed.

  6. Globe Valves:

Globe valves are used for regulating the flow in the pipeline and for throttling flow control. There is a flow direction arrow marked on the valve body and it must be installed according to it. Pressure classes of globe valve include 150 through 1500.

  7. Pressure Reducing Valves:

As the name tells, pressure reducing valves reduce the pressure of a fluid. It controls the downstream pressure or outlet of the fluid. It is an open, 2 ways valve which ensures the pressure of the fluid until the desired pressure is reached downstream.

These valves are used in many different appliances, systems, and common items inside the house, industries. Industrial valves are of various types such as Gate Valves, Globe Valves, Ball Valves, Butterfly Valves, Check Valves, Pressure Valves, and Diaphragm Valves, etc. SKG Pneumatics Inc, are leading suppliers of Industrial Valves and Equipment, based in Delhi. They are offering a quality range of industrial valves & all types of fire safety products.

Applications of Valves in Water Industry

In industrial engineering, manufacturing and scientific communities, there is a vast use of valves. The main objective of the valve is to control the flow and pressure of water and to release air from the water system. Valves play a very ample role in the water industry.  Water valves are used in many parts of daily mechanical devices such as HVAC and water system in an office.

Most Common Valves Found in the Water Industry and their Characteristics

1. Gate Valves

Gate valves are the most common valves found in the distribution system. Gate valves are mostly used for the on/ off control. Gate valves prevent the flow of the liquid in both directions. They are very easy to install and to maintain. Gate valves are cost efficient and they are mostly used in petroleum industries because of their abilities to cut through liquids.

2. Butterfly valve

Butterfly valve also known as quarter turn valve because it provides 90-degree rotary motion for stoppage. They often came in large sizes but short in length and are of very light weight. They posses very low torque requirements.

3. Ball Valves

Ball valves are considered as ideal for pump check services. In ball valves a ball rotates between two circular seats which are made up of a kind of PTFE and co- polymer. They exist in a small size range between 1/2” to 12”. These valves are used in higher pressure applications. Ball valves can be operated with less torque than gate valves and has small dimension and are lighter in comparison of gate valves.

4. Plug Valves

Plug valves are used to control the flow by rotating the conically tapered plugs inside the valve body. They came in a very simple design with few parts and their maintenance and repair is very easy to do. They contain very low head cost and comes drip tight closing.

5. Regulating Valves

Regulating valves are designed to enable the direct control of flow rate and the considerable control of process quantities i.e. reduces the flow/ pressure. A high head loss can be tolerated by regulating valve and they came with multiple control scenarios. These valves are installed on trunk or industrial pipelines and it consists of a regulating unit which varies the flow cross-section.

6. Air/Vacuum Release Valves

As it is clear from the name that these types of valves releases air during the filling and testing of pipe and it also releases air that naturally accrues in pipes. During draining it allows air into the pipe and it also assures the pipeline carrying capacity.
